What is Parent Talks?

Parent Talks from the Virtual SEND Conference are a series of pre-recorded talks designed to support parents over a wide range of topics.

National Conferences take place on a date in a city somewhere, often London. This places huge restrictions on who can access the event. You need to be near the event, be available on the specific date, be able to get away for the entire day and they often cost one hundred pounds or more. For parents of children with SEND, it is often impossible to access a conference like this.

Parent Talks is different, it is a series of online talks, delivered like a TV series. The talks will feature experts delivering high-value talks with useful information for parents across a variety of topics.

Parents can access Parent Talks in a way that suits them. They can binge watch 6 talks in a day or watch the talks over a series of evenings. Parent Talks fits into people’s lives, giving them a way to access support and advice.

We will release the first 6 talks on launch day and the final 6 talks 2 weeks later. You can watch the talks whenever you want.

“I chose to watch [A step-by-step guide to how to apply for an EHC Assessment] as a professional working in school with the aim of supporting parents in making requests for assessment. I must say I found it informative my own point of view as well, as there is very little of this kind of content freely available for SENCOs and others.”

Who are Parent Talks for?

Parent Talks from the Virtual SEND Conference are for parents of children or young people with SEND. The talks are designed to help support parents. There is minimal guidance from the Government/Local Authorities. Parents always seem to be burdened with all the pain and misery of fighting for their children’s rights and their future, often alone with no support. Support doesn’t seem to come from the Government/LAs until the parents can’t cope. This needs to change, but it doesn’t seem to be happening. Parents need more support and guidance to empower them when asking/fighting for help for their children. We want to help as many families as possible.

We can reach lots of parents with Parent Talks, a wider reach than any physical conference as we have removed so many limitations. Parents and carers can watch the talks as much as they want. They can rewind, pause etc. and will be able to download the presentations and handouts.

What about schools?

Schools can also purchase access to watch with the parents of their pupils (when they can) and invite parents in for a coffee morning to watch a session together (when they can). Schools can also use the talks to support the families they work with.
